“Haven,” a room-sized installation, comprises more than 5,600 paper bricks made of my mother’s calligraphy studies written over the past decades. The simplified labyrinth contains an accessible center space where suspended word cutouts hover above a pool of calligraphy ink. The structure pays tribute to the cumulative creative activities of artists and represents the safe haven they created for the artists’ personal and creative lives.

“Haven” was partly funded by the 7th Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial and first installed in Sharjah Art Museum, UAE, in 2018, with original music by Jie and Dan duet.
